Homemade Wonton Soup

Wonton soup is a comforting classic, known for its delicate dumplings and light yet flavorful broth. This version uses seasoned ground pork wrapped in thin wonton skins, simmered gently and served in a fragrant chicken broth infused with garlic, soy sauce, and sesame oil. It is a balanced dish that feels both light and satisfying, perfect for a cozy meal at home.

Below you will find a clear breakdown of ingredients and step by step instructions to help you prepare wonton soup from scratch.

Ingredients

Wontons

  • 8 ounces ground pork
  • 1 tablespoon rice wine vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1 teaspoon fresh ginger, grated
  • 1 teaspoon brown sugar
  • 2 green onions, finely chopped
  • 24 square wonton wrappers, about 3½ inches each

Soup

  • 6 cups chicken broth
  • 1½ teaspoons garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 2 to 3 green onions, finely chopped

Instructions

Preparing the Wontons

In a large mixing bowl, add the ground pork, rice wine vinegar, soy sauce, sesame oil, grated ginger, brown sugar, and chopped green onions. Mix thoroughly until the filling is well combined and evenly seasoned.

Place one heaping teaspoon of the pork mixture in the center of each wonton wrapper. Lightly moisten the edges of the wrapper with water. Fold the wrapper into a triangle shape, pressing gently to remove any trapped air.

Lift the longer edge of the triangle slightly, then bring the two corners together in opposite directions. Press firmly to seal, using a small amount of water if needed. Repeat the process with the remaining wrappers and set the finished wontons aside while preparing the soup.

Preparing the Soup

In a medium pot set over medium heat, combine the chicken broth, minced garlic, soy sauce, sesame oil, and green onions. Warm the broth gently, allowing the flavors to blend.

In a separate large pot, bring approximately 4 quarts of water to a rolling boil. Carefully add the wontons and cook for about 5 minutes, or until they float and the filling is fully cooked.

Using a strainer or slotted spoon, remove the wontons from the water and transfer them directly into the warm broth. Stir gently to avoid breaking the wrappers.

Serving

Serve the wonton soup hot, garnished with additional green onions if desired. The result is a light, aromatic soup with tender dumplings and a clean, savory broth.

This homemade wonton soup is simple to prepare and delivers classic flavor with minimal effort, making it an excellent choice for both weeknight meals and comforting lunches.
