Richie Lopez was diagnosed with Anophthalmia which can be described as a congenital absence of one or both eyes. Richie’s mother discovered her baby boy has no eyes after nearly two weeks after giving birth.
When the boy was born, doctors thought his eyelids are just swollen. An MRI would later reveal that he was born without eyes. “The first thought through your mind is how did this even happen and how was it not even caught?” said the mother. Expanders were sutured into Richie’s eye sockets. This is necessary is order to keep them spaced and ready for future prosthetic replacement.
